Wadden Sea Harbour Schiermonnikoog sailing advice

For a sailing trip to Schiermonnikoog, a draught of approximately 1.40 m is advisable, taking the tide into account. The harbour is almost dry at low tide, so that you will then be lying in the soft mud. On the east side, next to the harbour, boats can stand clear of the water. Contact the Harbour Master: 0519-531544 or VHF Channel 31.

Route to Wadden Sea Harbour Schiermonnikoog

From Lauwersoog: departure half an hour before Lauwersoog high tide. Distance 5 miles, sailing time 1 hour (with a little counter-current), depending on wind strength and engine power. After the breakwaters in NW direction to the Z18 or Z16. At Z14-BZ15 a choice has to be made:

  • From Lauwersoog, boats up to approx. 1.40m draft: via Zoutkamperlaag towards Z8-GL1. Via the Glinder (keep green barrels on the starboard side) to separation barrel GL4-GvS5. Then in an easterly direction in the Groote Siege to the Reegeul channel and then follow the buoyage of this shallow and narrow channel to the head of the harbour.
  • From Lauwersoog, 1.10m draft: via the Geul van Brakzand, the last part to pass from 2 hours before to 1 hour after high tide. Keep the green barrels on the port side until separation barrel GZ1-BZ2. Then head east in the Groote Siege to the Reegeul channel and follow the buoyage of this shallow and narrow channel to the head of the harbour.
  • From Ameland via the North Sea: follow the route through the Reegeul channel along the ferry landing stage in the direction of Westgat Ameland. From the last buoy WA1 along the Bornrif and the Ameland plain in the direction of Westgat Schiermonnikoog. At the Schiermonnikoog Gat, turn eastward until you reach the Reegeul channel. Then follow the buoyage of this shallow and narrow channel to the head of the harbour.
  • From Ameland via the Wadden Sea: follow the route through the Reegeul channel along the ferry landing stage, then the Veerbootgat and then across the tidal divide via the Zuiderspruit, Friesche Wad, Wierumer Wad and Paesenrede. You end up in the Zoutkamperlaag and then go starboard to Gat van Schier and the Groote Siege. From the Groote Siege to the Reegeul channel and then follow the buoyage of this shallow and narrow channel to the head of the harbour.

The Wadden Sea World Heritage Site is a unique nature reserve.

Nature and the tides make sailing on the Wadden Sea (Waddenzee) World Heritage Site a real experience. The Wadden Sea is also vitally important for many birds, fish and mammals. They need the ability to look for food undisturbed, to rest, to breed and to raise their young.

Sailing safely and responsibly on the Wadden Sea with respect for nature.

That’s why the WADDEN SEA SAILING GUIDE has been developed – the Code of Honour for sailing safely and responsibly on the Wadden Sea and for enjoying it without disturbing nature.
